The prison has made notable improvements in accommodation, healthcare access, and resettlement outcomes, particularly for housing. Key challenges include staffing levels, the need for strategic planning for prison expansion, and ensuring all prisoners can access mandated programmes and vocational qualifications.

HMP Northumberland performs well compared to similar prisons in terms of levels of violence and self-harm, and has worked hard to improve prisoner accommodation and facilities. The Gateway recovery unit has been refurbished, and prisoner-led environmental improvement teams foster skills and responsibility. OFSTED assessed education provision as good in all areas, and instructors in workshops are well-informed and motivated. The prison has also made efforts to improve release planning, including an employment strategy and employer engagement.
