Conclusion
Long- and medium-duration energy storage for the electricity system will be critical for a fully decarbonised grid, but it will not always be the cheapest option: energy efficiency, thermal energy storage, demand-side response and interconnectors can minimise our reliance on energy storage, especially on shorter timescales.
