Recommendation 48

48 Paragraph: 134

Flexible demand can help to smooth out variations across hours and days.

Conclusion
Flexible demand can help to smooth out variations across hours and days. In extreme cases of low generation, it may help balance the system if electrified industries shut down temporarily to reduce peak demand, but it does not seem that mechanisms for this have been explored. However, there could also be demand-side risks, such as a “run on the plugs”, for example if a much higher than normal number of drivers decide to charge their electric vehicles simultaneously due to concerns over supply.
