Full decision

Ms X complained that her mother had suffered a bowel leak following an operation shortly before her death. She was also concerned that the Health Board had not discharged her mother within sufficient time for her to be able die at home.

The Ombudsman found that the Health Board could have provided fuller explanations which may have aided Ms X’s understanding. She sought the Health Board’s agreement to provide more information to Ms X about the bowel leak and the discharge. In particular, the Ombudsman asked the Health Board to consider whether any actions could be taken to avoid a recurrence of the apparently delayed discharge decision .

The Health Board agreed to provide this information to Ms X within 40 working days.
