●Inquiry recommendation

The system of Distinction Awards for hospital consultants should be examined to determine whether it could be used to provide greater incentives than exist at present for providing good quality of care to patients. The possibility of its extension to include junior hospital doctors should be explored.

The reformed National Clinical Impact Awards scheme (which replaced the NHS Clinical Excellence Awards) was introduced in April 2022 to better reflect the increasing diversity within the consultant population and to improve the scheme’s outreach. This is being done by increasing the number of awards, ensuring more high-performing consultants received the recognition and reward for their exemplary national contribution over and above their contractual duties to the NHS and its patients. This has been made possible by making them non-consolidated and non-pensionable..

The Government agreed with this recommendation.

In its January 2002 response, the Department of Health referred to new NHS Clinical Excellence Awards, which would reward those who make the biggest contribution to delivering and improving health services in terms of leadership and clinical excellence.
