Conclusion
An important pre-requisite for reducing methane emissions from the waste sector is the reduction of organic waste that will decompose to generate methane; this has many co-benefits. Reducing food waste not only reduces methane emissions as the waste decomposes, but also embedded emissions from production. For example, when meat is wasted not only does it emit methane after disposal, but also the emissions that rise through its production and the life of the animal are wasted.
