Recommendation 36

Conclusion
We have heard that the biggest source of landfill methane emissions is from the handling of food waste. The 2026 target date to have all local authorities conduct weekly domestic food waste collections will be crucial to tackle this. The statutory instrument to enact the target date was passed under the previous Government on 17 May 2024. However, this policy can only succeed if it is clearly communicated and achieves confidence. We did not see a clear delivery plan from the previous Government about how it planned to achieve this logistically challenging deadline, and witnesses questioned whether the level of funding would be sufficient.
