Recommendation
Agriculture accounts for 49 per cent of UK methane emissions, of which 85 per cent comes from ruminants through enteric fermentation. There are promising solutions to mitigate methane emissions from ruminants, though several are currently technologically immature. Low-cost, long-term solutions must be prioritised. The UK Government must lead an open and honest conversation with the sector and supermarkets about how these costs will be distributed to reduce emissions whilst not burdening farmers or consumers unfairly. Feed additives, while not a panacea, have significant potential. The Government should embrace new technologies and explore further options to support and fund selective breeding, animal health and productivity improvements.
