Recommendation (the committee's words)
As scientific debate in this area evolves, the Government should monitor it closely and consider how additional metrics can be robustly employed at the sectoral and the business level to improve understanding of the UK’s emissions. As a first step, the Government should move towards unilaterally implementing an auxiliary metric to better reflect the warming impact of methane. The UK should also play an active role in international discussions when the United National Framework Convention on Climate Change considers the need to review these common metrics, no later than 2028.
