Conclusion
The original New Towns of the mid-twentieth century were not ancillary to the then Government’s housing policy. Rather, they were a deliberate and central part of national government policy and were key to achieving the housebuilding targets of the day. Those New Towns and the planning and design principles behind them—for better or worse—continue to shape the UK’s built environment to this day. 177
