When it comes to supporting prisoners into employment, both during and following their sentence, Welsh prisons are performing well when compared with the average figures for England and Wales. We were encouraged by the positive experiences described to us by businesses working with prisoners and prison leavers in Wales, as well as by their recommendation that other businesses consider getting involved in prisoner training and recruitment schemes. However, for these partnerships to work effectively, prison leaders must ensure that prisoners are gaining the right qualifications and skills and that they are providing adequate support and advice to employers.
