About these figures. Figures are from the Ministry of Justice Safety in Custody statistics, release of 29 October 2026 (deaths to September 2026). The Ministry revises earlier periods in each quarterly release. Deaths first recorded as "awaiting further information" are later classified, for example as self-inflicted or natural causes, when inquest or investigation findings are received. Figures for recent years, and the classification of those deaths, may therefore change. 2026 covers January to September only.
