18
Accepted
Paragraph: 66
Evaluate primary school careers programme after one year and scale up nationally if effective.
Conclusion
The Department should evaluate the success of its careers programme for primary schools after its first year, and if it has been shown to have a positive impact, scale it up to cover all areas of England. In doing so the Department should consider working with the full range of providers who have demonstrated their ability to provide effective programmes in this space.
Government Response Summary
The government accepts the recommendation, confirming the Careers & Enterprise Company (CEC) will evaluate the success of its primary school careers pilots and work with a range of providers. They commit to considering how to scale up support and will publish further details and timeframes in a Strategic Action Plan for Careers in 2024.

HM Government
Accepted
The Government accepts this recommendation. As set out in response to Recommendation 13, The Careers & Enterprise Company (CEC) is currently piloting careers programmes in 70 primary schools across 10 Careers Hubs in Education Investment Areas. The CEC will evaluate the success of these pilots and use the learning to inform future policy and investment decisions. This includes assessing the impact of the pilots on children’s awareness of different careers and their aspirations. We are working closely with the CEC to evaluate the effectiveness of these pilots and consider how we can further scale up support for primary schools, building on the learning from these pilots. We will set out further detail in the Strategic Action Plan for Careers, which we will publish in 2024. This will include findings following stakeholder discussions on the best way to implement the Committee’s recommendations and set timeframes for doing so. We agree with the Committee that it is important to work with a full range of providers who have demonstrated their ability to provide effective programmes in this space. The CEC is working with a range of providers to deliver the primary pilots, including local authorities, careers organisations, and employers. We will continue to engage with a wide range of stakeholders to ensure that we are drawing on the best practice and expertise from across the country.
