Recommendation 18

18 Deferred

Make parents in training or education eligible for the 30-hours childcare entitlement.

Recommendation
We recommend the Government make parents in training or education eligible to claim the 30-hours entitlement. This will support single parents who need to retrain to secure more flexible work, and also support parents who are trying to re-enter the Support for childcare and the early years 75 workforce after a period of absence. The Department for Work and Pensions should also consider what further ways to support single parents, for example by raising the single income child benefit threshold from £50,000, where it has been frozen since
Government Response Summary
The government will consider making parents in training eligible to claim the 30-hours entitlement and DWP will keep policies under review to support single parents.
Government Response Deferred
HM Government Deferred
We recognise the importance of enabling parents to access the training and education they need to support their families. We will consider the Committee’s recommendation as we continue to develop the new entitlements. DWP keep all their policies under review and regularly engage with stakeholders to understand how to best support single parents into work.
