The Government welcomes the Committee's report, says it will be shared as a reference for future programmes, and responds to each recommendation mainly by describing existing and planned work.

  • On diversity (Recommendation 6), the Government "agrees with the Committee's recommendation" that future national commemorations should aim, "where possible", to engage with a range of different communities.
  • On intergenerational work (Recommendation 3), it says it "agree[s]" that this "should be explored during the planning of any commemoration events of a similar nature".
  • On teaching resources (Recommendation 2), DCMS is providing £100,000 for the IWM's Digital Legacy programme, and DCMS and the DfE "will work together to explore ways to inform schools and teachers about the portal".
  • On digital preservation (Recommendation 11), DCMS is encouraging organisations to plan for preservation "where cost effective to do so", and the IWM digital portal is stated to launch in June 2020.
