Recommendation 118

118

The Arctic will remain central to Russia’s military and strategic thinking.

Conclusion
The Arctic will remain central to Russia’s military and strategic thinking. The military setbacks it has suffered in Ukraine, and Finland and Sweden’s NATO accession, will only increase the importance of the region for Russia’s leadership. Russia has a legitimate interest in the Arctic, but the UK approach and that of its allies must be robust in deterring malign activity.
