Conclusion
Representatives of Arctic indigenous peoples expressed concerns to us that further militarisation of the region as a result of geopolitical tensions could have a significant impact on their way of life and security. In the past, the militarisation of the Arctic has been associated, in some cases, with the forced displacement of indigenous peoples and the pollution of their homeland with military waste. During a recent visit to Denmark and Greenland, Francisco Cali Tzay, UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, drew attention to the history of adverse environmental and social effects of military activity. 141
