Conclusion
Methane is responsible for 30 per cent of global warming to date, and global emissions are rising. Methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. However, its short-lived nature in the atmosphere means that mitigating methane emissions can buy the planet valuable time to combat climate change. Reducing methane emissions globally now would achieve cooling in the near term. Mitigating methane emissions may also offer health co-benefits and economic opportunities from utilising captured methane that would otherwise be lost.
