HMCTS should ensure that the Crown Court provides the same level of information to journalists on the outcome of cases as is currently provided by the Magistrates’ court.

The Criminal Procedure Rules60 concerning the publication of hearing lists and the supply of information to parties, the public, and the media are the same for magistrates’ courts and the Crown Court (and, indeed, for the criminal division of the Court of Appeal). 63. In terms of HMCTS practice, however, at present magistrates’ lists and registers are proactively provided to the media, whereas information is provided reactively in the Crown Court. This is described in our media guidance.61 The Government will keep this under review and consider how the Crown Court may be brought in line with practice in the magistrates’ courts in the future.
