HM Government

As part of the ongoing update to the Safety at Street Works and Road Works Code of Practice, a joint piece of statutory guidance across the UK’s devolved governments, the Department for Transport, Transport Scotland, the Welsh Government, and the Department for Infrastructure in Northern Ireland have been working collaboratively with consultants Arup AECOM. This work is being supported by representatives from the sector via the HAUC Safety Working Group, as well as stakeholders such as the Health and Safety Executive. In addition, engagement has taken place with groups representing vulnerable road users including DPTAC to ensure that accessibility needs are fully considered in the revised Code. We are preparing to launch a consultation on the proposed changes to the code. Following the committee’s recommendation the consultation will outline the specific changes made to improve accessibility during street works, incorporating advice received from DPTAC. As part of this process, groups representing the needs of vulnerable road users will have the opportunity to review and comment on the draft to ensure their accessibility requirements have been properly addressed. If the consultation identifies any further improvements needed to make street works more accessible, these will be incorporated before the updated Code is finalised and published. This approach will help ensure the revised Code of Practice fully reflects and supports the needs of vulnerable road users.
