The Government agrees with this recommendation where it is appropriate. The Department is proactively and carefully monitoring the work that Network Rail and ORR are currently undertaking to look at the potential for third rail electrification extension. We are also funding a project, led by the Rail Safety and Standards Board, to look at further technical mitigations that could be implemented to improve the safety of third rail electrification. Recommendation 6: In responding to this Report, if not earlier, the Department should publish the list of “no regret” electrification schemes identified by Network Rail and confirm which schemes they intend to deliver as a priority, the costs of doing so, and the timeframes.
