Recommendation 5

Accepted
Accelerate initiatives promoting clean energy and retrofit careers for under-represented groups and new workforce entrants.
Recommendation
The Government should continue to develop and launch further initiatives to promote clean energy and retrofit careers among under-represented groups and those outside the existing workforce; the actions set out in the Post-16 Education and Skills White Paper should be accelerated to bring down the barriers to new entrants from these groups taking up such roles in time to have a meaningful impact on the goals for clean energy and retrofit. (Recommendation, Paragraph 33)
Government Response Summary
The government agrees with the recommendation, stating that the existing Office for Clean Energy Jobs within DESNZ already coordinates work, convenes stakeholders, and identifies skills gaps to build a skilled clean energy workforce, including in retrofit careers.

HM Government
Accepted
The government agrees with this recommendation. The Office for Clean Energy Jobs is a cross-cutting team within DESNZ that coordinates work to support building a skilled clean energy workforce, including in retrofit, and ensure these are good jobs as set out in the Clean Energy Jobs Plan. It plays a crucial convening role between industry, trade unions, and training providers to identify critical skills gaps, align them with deployment plans across clean energy sectors, and ensure that job quality is kept at the forefront. The Office for Clean Energy Jobs works closely with sector teams across DESNZ, including the Net Zero Buildings Supply Chain team, who lead on sector-specific initiatives.
