Recommendation 1
The IOPC recommends that South Yorkshire Police (SYP) should incorporate training on interacting with Transgender people for all staff within their regular discrimination awareness training/ refresher training.
This follows an IOPC review of a complaint handled other than by investigation by South Yorkshire Police whereby officers were unaware of the correct procedures of searching a transgender person who was arrested. I am aware that there are specific areas in SYP where training is being rolled out, specifically within Sheffield for NPT supervisors. However, I feel that this training would be extremely beneficial to all staff who deal with members of the public to ensure that they act in accordance with Equality Act 2010, and in line with the College of Policing Authorised Professional Practice guidance. This will also improve relations with any transgender persons coming into contact with the police.
