Airports Commission

Airports Commission: Final Report
Completed
Sir Howard Davies · Published 1 July 2015 · Commissioned by Department for Transport

Independent commission examining the need for additional UK airport capacity, unanimously concluding that a new northwest runway at Heathrow Airport presents the strongest case for meeting long-term connectivity needs.

Government Response

The Government accepted the Airports Commission's recommendation to expand airport capacity in the south-east through a new north-west runway at Heathrow. It first announced its support on 25 October 2016, then gave effect to the decision through the Airports National Policy Statement, which was approved by the House of Commons and designated by the Secretary of State for Transport on 26 June 2018. The NPS sets the planning policy framework against which a development consent application for Heathrow expansion would be assessed.
