Recommendation 1

1. To keep people safe, the provider should ensure a protocol is in place for all people requiring ‘as and when’ or ‘PRN’ medication. This protocol should record, at a minimum, what the medication is for, when it should be used, and any measures that should be taken prior to using the medication. The effect of the medication should be recorded each time it is used, to enable health professionals to review the medication if necessary. This is to ensure that care and support is consistent with the Health and Social Care Standards (HSCS) which state that: ‘I experience high quality care and support based on relevant evidence, guidance and best practice’ (HSCS 4.11).
