1. To ensure that children experience consistent approaches to their care, play and learning, staff should be further supported to understand how types of play and interactions promote children’s learning and developing needs over time. This should include, but not be limited to, training in play types relevant to the stages of child development, schematic play and the role of staff in supporting children's care, play and learning. This is to ensure that care and support is consistent with the Health and Social Care Standards (HSCS) which state that: 'As a child, I can direct my own play and activities in the way that I choose, and freely access a wide range of experiences and resources suitable for my age and stage, which stimulate my natural curiosity, learning and creativity' (HSCS 2.27); and 'I experience high quality care and support based on relevant evidence, guidance and best practice' (HSCS 4.11).
