1. To ensure that people receive medication correctly and safely, the provider should make sure that there is increased oversight of medications which have a shelf life. Medication with a shelf life should be dated when opened and discarded in line with the prescription instructions. This is to ensure that care and support is consistent with the Health and Social Care Standards (HSCS) which state that: 'I experience high quality care and support based on relevant evidence, guidance and best practice.' (HSCS 4.11).
2. To ensure that people can be confident that staff are competent and skilled, the provider should introduce formal observations of staff practice. This would help identify training needs and ensure that staff have the necessary skills, knowledge and competence to support people.
This is to ensure that care and support is consistent with the Health and Social Care Standards (HSCS) which state that: ‘I have confidence in people because they are trained, competent and skilled, are able to reflect on their practice, and follow their professional and organisational codes'.
