The government's response
Summary written by Accountability Index from the government's response. It is not the government's own words.
Ofsted's response does not state agreement or disagreement with the Committee's conclusions, but sets out its view that sudden changes in governance and leadership affected the Birmingham schools and describes steps it is taking.
- Ofsted says it "fiercely guards" its reputation as an independent inspectorate, and quotes the Chief Inspector's advice that "a culture of fear and intimidation has developed in some of the schools since their previous inspection".
- Ofsted says it is "committed to ensuring that such drastic declines are identified as quickly as possible" and will continue to work with local authorities and the regional school commissioner.
- From September 2015 Ofsted "will begin conducting shorter inspections of good schools every three years", so that signs of decline "can be spotted earlier", and it is bringing inspector contracts in-house.
- Ofsted says it "will shortly publish an up dated overview" of the schools placed in special measures in 2014 and "will share this with the committee".
