The government's response

Summary written by Accountability Index from the government's response. It is not the government's own words.

The government says it welcomes the report and sets out its "commitment to continue the development of the role of the RSCs", agreeing with some recommendations and declining others.

  • It agrees that the schools landscape is continuing to evolve and that the role of RSCs will also evolve, and intends to publish a succinct summary of the RSC role on GOV.UK.
  • On London, it says splitting the capital across RSCs is intended to spread expertise outwards, and the national Schools Commissioner "intends to convene" a pan-London group of education leaders.
  • On Headteacher Boards, it "does not agree" that maintained school headteachers should be eligible for membership, but agrees to introduce an explicit skills profile and will publish terms of reference.
  • On transparency, it "already intends to produce an annual report" on RSCs, with the national Schools Commissioner also intending to publish a yearly report, and says it will publish an RSC decision-making framework.
