Promote children's phones with mobile companies, restricting internet access and app downloads

Recommendation
The next Government should work with mobile phone companies and network operators to promote children’s phones, a class of phone which can be used for contact and GPS location but not access to the internet or downloading apps.

Government is aware that the market is considering devices such as this, where there is market demand for phones with various functionalities. government is monitoring the development of such phones but is currently focused on the effective implementation of the Online Safety Act so children can have a safer online experience regardless of the device they’re using. We acknowledge the importance of technology creators ensuring that their products are safe and not exploiting vulnerabilities. The Online Safety Act will introduce safeguards that protect children from illegal content or activity and protect children from accessing harmful and age-inappropriate content. We are focused on getting these protections implemented swiftly and effectively.
