Select committee: Education Committee

Recommendation 14

2nd Report - Reading for Pleasure Published 17 Jul 2026 Addressed to Department for Education
Recommendation (the committee's words)
The Department must act decisively and evaluate the benefits of the different programmes being undertaken, with a particular focus on supporting children from those groups least likely to read for pleasure. This should include looking at the benefits of book gifting schemes; reading volunteers in schools; and programmes supporting parents with shared reading in the early years. This evaluation should be completed within a year, and the Government should then move to scale what works nationally and with urgency as a lasting legacy of the National Year of Reading. (Recommendation, Paragraph 45) Early years and the home learning environment
