The Government must listen to and engage with survivors of forced adoption practices. The Government should commit to a survivor engagement strategy that guarantees regular consultation and clear lines of accountability, both in the short term as the Government works towards an apology, and for the long-term to ensure that survivors’ experiences and insights directly inform the Government’s decision-making processes and that they are able to hold the Government to account for the impact of the apology. ACCEPT IN PRINCIPLE The Government has undertaken and will continue structured engagement with those affected by historic forced adoption practices. We will build on this by maintaining ongoing dialogue with individuals and representative organisations, to inform policy development and the implementation of the Government’s commitments in a way that is proportionate and sustainable. This will include working with those affected to co-develop communications and guidance, and considering appropriate mechanisms for ongoing engagement and accountability as implementation progresses.
