The government's response

Summary written by Accountability Index from the government's response. It is not the government's own words.

The government's response to the Committee's report on the social impact of participation in culture and sport accepts some points, disagrees with others, and says Ministers will consider how to coordinate further.

  • On combat sports in prisons, the government says current policy prohibits them and it does not "feel it is necessary" to change this, though it will "continue to monitor the evidence in this field".
  • On sport in the justice system, it "would not agree" that it has been reluctant to promote sport's role, but "do[es] accept" sport has a much greater role to play. A Sports Forum was set up in early 2019, which it "will keep ... under review".
  • On the arts in prisons, it agrees access is "not as consistent as it should be" and proposes a stocktake with the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance and others, but does not commission the separate review the Committee recommended.
  • On the EBacc and music education, it states it does "not agree" that government policy has had a negative impact on music education, and says it "will consider some of the recommendations" of the APPG report in the refresh of the National Plan for Music Education.
