Recommendation
We recommend that the government legislate for a prominence regime specifically for trustworthy news content, including that from the BBC, on social media. We note that the government is currently consulting on a definition of “trustworthy news”. The government needs to ensure that any approach to defining trustworthy news providers is transparent and independent, and free from political influence. We may return to this matter when we see more detail on the government’s criteria to determine what constitutes a trustworthy news provider. (Recommendation, Paragraph 129)
