Following the publication of the Trade Strategy, the UK has joined the Multi-Party Interim Appeal Arbitration Arrangement (MPIA), reinforcing our commitment to an effective rules-based international trading system and to defend UK trading interests. Joining the MPIA sends a clear signal that the UK is committed to the principles of free and fair trade. It demonstrates the Government’s commitment to an effective rules- based international trading system. WTO dispute settlement provides a route for the UK to challenge unfair trading practices which affect UK business and consumers. Joining the MPIA provides the UK with assurance that we could achieve binding resolutions to any UK offensive disputes against MPIA members. It therefore has benefits for pursuing potential future UK offensive disputes to protect and advance UK interests. The Government continues to support re-establishing a fully-functioning WTO dispute settlement system, and is keen to continue discussions with other WTO Members to achieve that objective.
