Recommendation
The Department has not set out a detailed implementation plan for funding and delivering its steel strategy. The government’s steel strategy, which is aligned with its ten-year industrial strategy, sets an ambition to increase the proportion of UK steel demand met by domestic production from around 30% in 2024 to 40% to 50% and to position the UK as a world leader in clean, modern steel production. However, the strategy does not set a time by which this target is expected to be met, or the corresponding 5 volume of steel that would be required domestically to meet it. As part of its strategy, the Government should set a tonnage target with corresponding timescales.
