Carbon capture and storage: Progress review

Inquiry scope

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a process whereby carbon dioxide is captured from large emitters (e.g. power stations) before being stored indefinitely. It has the potential to decarbonise the UK economy as a reasonable cost. Work on CCS is coordinated mainly by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. The Committee last reported on CCS in 2017. That report can be read here . Whilst accepting most of the Committee’s recommendations, the Department and HM Treasury disagreed with the Committee’s wish that they quantify and publish the economic cost of delays to, or cancellation of, CCS by the end of 2017. The Committee will question the Department both on reasons for disagreement with this recommendation, and on recent progress with CCS. The Committee will also seek an update on other recommendations the Committee has made.
