The Science and Technology Committee, under the Chairmanship of Lord Krebs, launched an inquiry into regenerative medicine. The term “regenerative medicine” is used to refer to any methods to replace or regenerate human cells, tissues or organs in order to restore or establish normal function. One example of regenerative medicine treatments is the transplantation of a new trachea grown using the patient’s own stem cells. The inquiry will particularly focus on: UK expertise in the field, the applications of this research to treatments, the regulatory and financial barriers to translation and commercialisation of the findings of this research, and international comparisons.
