Inquiry scope (the committee's words)
The Science and Technology Committee, under the Chairmanship of Lord Krebs, launched an inquiry into regenerative medicine. The term “regenerative medicine” is used to refer to any methods to replace or regenerate human cells, tissues or organs in order to restore or establish normal function. One example of regenerative medicine treatments is the transplantation of a new trachea grown using the patient’s own stem cells. The inquiry will particularly focus on: UK expertise in the field, the applications of this research to treatments, the regulatory and financial barriers to translation and commercialisation of the findings of this research, and international comparisons. The Government welcomes the Committee's report and says it will establish a Regenerative Medicine Expert Group, while declining some recommendations and deferring responses on others to the TSB and Research Councils.

  • On delivery in the NHS, it agrees that a clear pathway will aid the sector and will establish a Regenerative Medicine Expert Group to develop an NHS delivery readiness strategy and action plan. The group will also monitor the effect of regulation.
