The Government responds to the Committee's follow-up report on judicial appointments by recognising the concerns raised and committing to some reviews and consultation, while setting out reasons for caution on returning to practice and on retirement age.

  • On pay, the Government "recognises" that workload, pension reform and pay restraint have affected morale, and says the Senior Salaries Review Body is due to report in summer 2018, after which it "will engage seriously with the recommendations" in a timely manner.
  • On working conditions, it cites over £84m spent fixing buildings since 2014 and a £1billion change programme, due to complete in 2022/23.
  • On returning to practice, it sets out arguments for the existing convention but says it "will seek the views of legal professions" and work with the judiciary to consider the impacts of any change.
