Recommendation 8

8 Accepted Paragraph: 60

Sentencer confidence in community sentences for women has significantly declined.

Conclusion
We support the MoJ’s commitment to supporting a greater proportion of women to successfully serve their sentences in the community. We recognise that a shift from custodial to community sentences must be led by the judiciary; however, we note concerns raised by witnesses that sentencer confidence in community sentences has declined.
Government Response Summary
The government launched a grants funding competition on 1 September for providers of women's residential services to apply for funding to pilot residential women's centres, with awards anticipated early 2023.

Government Response Accepted
HM Government Accepted
We accept this recommendation. As part of our grants funding competition for community interventions, launched on 1 September, we have offered potential providers of women’s residential services the opportunity to apply for funding for piloting residential women’s centres. The number of residential women’s centres that will benefit from this funding will be determined by the number of providers which apply and which then go on to receive an award. We anticipate awards being made early in 2023 and as part of their application providers will be required to set out their timeline for establishing and running the centres.
