Conclusion (the committee's words)
The National Audit Office plays an important and valuable role in scrutinising regulators’ use of public money. However, its remit focuses on value for money, across the whole of government. Therefore, we do not believe that expanding the NAO’s remit to include regular and systematic scrutiny of overall regulatory performance is the way forward. As well as having significant resource implications, it would risk complicating the clarity of the NAO’s current role.
