The government's response
Summary written by Accountability Index from the government's response. It is not the government's own words.
The Secretary of State for Wales welcomes the report's recognition of the importance of city and growth deals, agrees with several of its assessments, and states that scrutiny of the South Wales Metro would be "more appropriate" for the Welsh Assembly.
- On the Cardiff Gateway Review, the response says the Deal's Agreement "makes clear" that its targets apply only to Cardiff Capital Region's Investment Fund, not additionally to the Metro.
- It agrees that the Swansea Bay City Deal has made good progress, and says a further £18m is available upon approval of another project by the end of March 2020 and full implementation of the Independent Review's recommendations.
- It agrees that projects in a deal should be reviewed continuously to ensure value for money, while stating that regions decide what projects make up their deals.
- For Mid Wales, the Government says it continues to work with partners to reach Heads of Terms "by the end of 2020" following its £55 million commitment, and hopes the Welsh Government will match that funding.
