The government welcomes the report but, on several recommendations, says its decisions will be taken later, alongside the 2020 Spending Review and the development of a successor strategy (CWIS 2), and says a draft revised strategy this year is not feasible.

  • On reporting, the Department plans to publish the first progress report "as soon as possible" and "will consider more regular publication, potentially on an annual basis". It does not intend to include an assessment of the fitness of the aims and targets in that report.
  • On targets, the government "will consider" the appropriateness of aims and targets alongside CWIS 2, and "a broader range of aims and targets will be considered", including on modal shift.
  • On funding, decisions will be made in the multi-year Spending Review, now planned for 2020. "Subject to appropriate levels of funding", the Department intends to develop an integrated, long term, capital and revenue fund for local authorities.
  • On Traffic Management Act Part 6, the Department "notes the Committee's recommendation" and "will consider this carefully". It says it will publish an updated Local Transport Note 2/08 "shortly".
