10th Report - Local roads funding and maintenance: filling the gap

Published 28 October 2019.

Summary written by Accountability Index from the government's response. It is not the government's own words.

The Government welcomes the Committee's report and responds to each recommendation, accepting several, taking some forward with work or consultation, and giving a reason for not setting out a detailed timeline on connected and automated vehicles.

  • On a long-term funding settlement, the Department is "working on developing a good evidence base" to submit a "strong business case" to HM Treasury as part of a future Spending Review, and "will consult with local authorities" on any future settlement.
  • On an independent review of local highway responsibilities, it notes a Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation review is due to report and will consider whether there is "a need for a further independent review".
  • It accepts the recommendations on a report on the digital innovation hub (within 12 months of the Hub going live) and on a report on the risk-based approach by the end of 2021.
  • It says setting out a detailed timeline for connected and automated vehicles "at this stage is premature", as it would likely be "quickly overtaken by events".
