The Government should use its influence internationally, following its leadership of COP26 and involvement in Mission Innovation, to set standards and timelines for decisions on the role of alternative fuels and hydrogen within aviation and shipping. In these areas the Government should seek to lead the development of standards that can be adopted internationally. (Paragraph 120) 74 The role of hydrogen in achieving Net Zero

Government recognises the important role that hydrogen and alternative fuels can play in the future decarbonisation of the aviation and maritime sectors. The government is committed to supporting the development and deployment of zero emission technologies and fuels, and to working with international partners to accelerate the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable future. Government is working to drive international action through its leadership of platforms such as the International Aviation Climate Ambition Coalition and the Zero Emission Shipping Mission. These platforms bring together governments, industry, and civil society to accelerate the development and deployment of zero emission technologies and fuels in the aviation and maritime sectors. Government is working with these partners to establish standards and timelines for decisions on the role of alternative fuels and hydrogen, and to promote the adoption of these standards internationally. Government recognises the importance of standards in ensuring the safety and interoperability of hydrogen and alternative fuels, and is committed to supporting the development of robust and internationally recognised standards. Government is working with international bodies such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to develop these standards, and to promote their adoption by countries around the world.
