The government's response

Summary written by Accountability Index from the government's response. It is not the government's own words.

The Government agrees that public confidence in the immigration system is important but maintains its net migration target, saying it "remain[s] committed to reducing net migration to sustainable levels, in the tens of thousands".

  • On an Annual Migration Report, the Government agrees it "could have benefits" but will only "give further consideration" once longer term post-EU-exit arrangements "have been put in place".
  • It does not accept that all migration should lead to a right to settle, and says it will continue a differentiated approach while keeping the rules under review.
  • On students, it says there is "no cap or limit" on international students "nor any intention to impose one". It says refugees staying over 12 months are rightly included in the net migration count.
  • On the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC), the Government says it has asked the MAC to report by September 2018 on EU and EEA migration and its role in the wider economy and society.
