Recommendation
We recommend that the Government work with local authorities and health partners to ensure that people receive appropriate psychosocial support in addition to their opioid substitution treatment and ensure that they can continue to access opioid substitution treatment at a pace that meets their needs.

The Government accepts this recommendation. Providing psychosocial support in addition to opioid substitution treatment is already in practice and is the recommended approach in Drug misuse and dependence: UK guidelines on clinical management17 ‘Orange Book’ published in 2017. In addition, the Care Quality Commission inspects services on best practice in treatment and care through implementation of the national guidance, this includes the psychosocial offer available for services users. 17 Drug misuse and dependence: UK guidelines on clinical management - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) We welcome the 10-Year Drug Strategy’s recognition of the potential positive impact of long-acting buprenorphine. We think that the use of Buvidal in Wales has provided a very encouraging UK evidence base and proved that it is an effective form of opioid substitution treatment.
