The government's response

Published 2 July 2019.

Summary written by Accountability Index from the government's response. It is not the government's own words.

The Government responds to the Committee's 40 recommendations by setting out existing and planned work on policing, and states it will consider the HMICFRS fraud recommendations and prioritise police funding at the Spending Review.

  • On funding, the Government says it is "enabling an increase in funding for the police system of up to £970m in 2019/20", and that it recognises "there is a case for updating the funding formula", which it says should be considered in the context of the Spending Review.
  • On fraud, it says it will "review" the HMICFRS recommendations "to consider what the Home Office can further support", and "intends to publish" fraud outcomes data on the same basis as other recorded crimes.
  • It does not appoint a Commissioner for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse, instead pointing to the inter-ministerial group on child sexual abuse and existing Commissioners.
  • On the publication of the Joint Fraud Taskforce review, it says the review "was produced as an internal document and was not intended for broader publication", but that the Taskforce will publish its plans once objectives, priority projects and resourcing "have been reset".
