What the inquiry looked at
“An inquiry into Asylum. Report: Asylum (PDF) Government Response: Asylum (PDF)”
The committee's words, from the inquiry page on parliament.uk ↗.
What it found
1. Oldham Unity has been providing support to destitute asylum seekers and refugees for over ten years.
2. Our experience leads us to believe that their need for support is increasing.
3. We feel that actively denying people food and shelter is a violation of their basic human rights.

7th Report - Asylum - Volume I
The government responded on 13 December 2013.
The government agrees with some of the Home Affairs Committee's recommendations on asylum decision-making and customer service, while not accepting others, including that there is a "culture of disbelief" and that legal aid residence test proposals should change.
- On timeliness, it agrees that nearly all initial decisions should be taken within 6 months and accepts it "should be taking well over 90%" within that time, adding that it "will introduce revised" customer service standards "as soon as possible".
- It does not agree that failed asylum seekers should receive the same support as those awaiting an initial decision, and it will not require service standards for Detained Fast Track allocations.
- On the Detained Fast Track, it does not believe "a service standard, per se, is appropriate" but says it "will publish the number of subsequent releases per year".
- On legal aid, it "will proceed" with its residence test proposal, with asylum seekers, children and victims of domestic violence or human trafficking exempt from it.
