Government Response Acknowledged
HM Government Acknowledged
In response to the Committee’s recommendations in paragraphs 200, 201 and 202, the Government is committed to making sure that elections are secure and fit for the modern age. As part of this, we keep the Electoral Commission’s role and powers, and those of the police and prosecution authorities, under review to ensure they are able to discharge their responsibilities effectively. The Government is grateful for the Committee’s report on the Elections Bill and its upcoming report on the Work of the Electoral Commission. The report was published after the Bill was introduced. Political parties have not been consulted on the proposals issued by the Committee, and many of their proposals may not be proportionate or practical. Further work must be done to consider the implications and practicalities of any further changes to complex electoral law.
